Awareness Respect Compassion (ARC) is a non-profit that aspires to give hope and comfort to those in desperate circumstances by sending hand-knitted hats, scarves, mittens, socks, blankets, and sweaters to shelters throughout the United States and abroad.

Welcome!

ARC is a non-profit, non-denominational and non-politically affiliated organization sending needed knits to shelters in the U.S. and internationally. Founded in 2007, ARC began as an individual effort to respond to the staggering number of indigent human rights refugees and abused animals with useful, hand-made knits.

ARC remains a grassroots effort focused on responsibly informing the public and making significant, substantive progress to ameliorate the circumstances of those in desperate need. Our goal is to contribute as those suffering from oppression, abuse, and neglect strive to restore dignity and hope in their lives. For those most vulnerable to hopelessness and desperation, anything that comforts can be a lifeline. Currently, ARC donates primarily to Life Funds for North Korean Refugees, and the Washington Humane Society.

Our Objective:

At ARC, we view fiber in two ways:

(1) literally, as material that can be used to keep beings warm and alive, and

(2) symbolically, as it represents the common thread of humanity.

We recognize the value of dignity in identity, and work to help secure a better quality of life for people and animals. We encourage refugees as they empower and liberate themselves in sub-zero temperatures by sending new, hand-knitted items. Warm items insulate and preserve body heat, increasing the likelihood of survival for refugees. Abused animals feel safer and calmer when they can nestle in snug knits. The difference a warm hat or cozy bed can make is the difference we strive to make – one stitch at a time.
